Replication and Political Methodology

  #ECPRHouseLectures

House Lecture – The Methods Edition

Organised by the ECPR Standing Group on Political Methodology

Thursday 10 February

This special edition of our House Lecture series took the form of a virtual takeover by our Standing Group on Political Methodology, held in conjunction with our 2022 Winter School

In this lecture, our panel provided reflections on questions around replicability and reproducibility, and offered practical suggestions on how to produce replicable findings in quantitative and qualitative settings.

Our panellists considered the following questions:
  • Is it true that we cannot trust our conclusions if we cannot replicate our findings?
  • How can we ensure replicability in such complex settings?
  • What tools and strategies could help us conduct more trustworthy research?
Speakers

Uri Simonsohn ESADE Business School and Co-founder at datacolada
Vera Troeger University of Hamburg and Editor at the Journal of Politics
Sebastian Karcher Qualitative Data Repository, Syracuse University

Chairs

Our Chairs are both Steering Committee Members of the Standing Group on Political Methodology

Lisa Lechner University of Innsbruck
Bernd Schlipphak University of Münster

About the House Lectures

In line with our overarching mission, the House Lectures aim to help break down barriers in European political science, to provide a platform for discourse and to reach out beyond academe and shine a light on the work of our discipline.

  • Inspired by Harbour House, our HQ in the UK, which provides both a literal and metaphorical ‘home’ for the ECPR community
  • Delivering insightful lectures on the hottest topics in political science and beyond
  • Each followed by extended Q&A sessions
  • Open to all, ECPR members and non-members
