Find out more

Our Joint Sessions of Workshops provides a unique platform for scholars at all stages of their careers, from all parts of the world, and all sub-fields of political science, to come together for several days of intense discussion, feedback and collaboration.

Over its five-decade history, it has helped tens of thousands of scholars hone their research, grow their networks and secure publishing opportunities.

After two successful fully virtual instalments, we are hoping to bring the discipline face-to-face again, with the 2022 edition planned to be held at The University of Edinburgh and online, from 19–22 April.

What to expect

  • Workshops are closed groups of 15–20 participants, lasting for several days
  • Topics of discussion are precisely defined
  • Only scholars working in the relevant field can take part
  • Each participant presents a Paper; it is then discussed in depth by the group
  • Participants may attend only one Workshop
  • Participants are expected to be present at and fully participate in all of the Workshop sessions

The latest QS World University Rankings put the University at 11th place in Arts & Humanities disciplines. Within the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, Politics and International Relations (PIR) figures are among the largest academic units.

Key areas of expertise cover constitutional, territorial and Scottish politics; European politics; foreign and domestic policy; gender; international political economy; security studies; and political theory. Recent areas of expansion include the Middle East politics and the global environment. PIR currently has 59 academic staff, 800 undergraduate, 130 MSc and 40 PhD students.

NB: While we are actively planning to host the physical part of the event at the University of Edinburgh, we are prepared to adopt a fully virtual format, if necessary.
